You've probably heard these...
"Money is the root of all evil."
"If you try to become successful, you're greedy"
"Jesus told the rich young ruler to sell everything he had... you're materialistic if you have nice things."
And maybe you're smart enough to know that they aren't Biblical, but perhaps you've felt a twinge of guilt (like I have at times) when you "go for it" and really attempt to get something big in your business or in your career.
I used to feel like there was a voice in my head... or something inside me that would pull me back... just when something big was in my grasp. Worse yet... I used to think I was alone.
An Important Discovery...
It was just about 2 years ago that I sat across from my good
friend over a cup of coffee in a local restaurant. We had met early
in the morning to talk about some of the challenges we faced in
profitability in our businesses. He, the CEO of a software company
servicing clients on multiple continents, and I, operating a
marketing consultancy. While we had been good friends for years, something developed out of that conversation that brought our friendship to an entirely new level of intimacy. I knew, for example, that he had been born overseas — the son of missionaries to some of the darkest parts of the world. I also knew — having met his father and mother — the level of devotion to Christ that had caused them to risk their very lives in service to the Call of God.
He knew that I had been born into a devoted Christian family here in the States — that my father had been a pastor when I was younger, and that my mother’s father had been in the ministry since shortly after World War II. He knew that our family was in church every time the doors were open.
What neither of us knew until that day, however, was that both of us dealt with an inner struggle with success. It seemed that we both had always reached a place where that “big breakthrough” had eluded us just when it seemed to be in our grasp. We learned that both of us were fighting against inner programming — instilled in us from childhood — that somehow there was something “wrong” with hitting a big win financially and in business. Both of us had come to understand that we were serving God in the marketplace in response to His call on our lives… and yet we both had run up against seemingly impenetrable barriers.
We began meeting on a regular basis to explore the roots and the nature of the battle between heart and head — between Biblical understanding and the traditions that seemed to be infused in our thinking. What we discovered and what God has shown us — individually and jointly — has been nothing short of amazing.
Do you question whether God could really want you to accomplish what you’re working so hard to achieve?
You've Been Lied To...
Perhaps you've never heard sermons that led you to believe that it was somehow wrong to succeed or to do well. I hope that's true. (Believe me, I've heard enough of them for both of us!)
But even so... you may have dealt with thoughts that told you:
- You don't deserve to succeed.
- You're not qualified.
- Your motives are wrong.
I finally decided it was high time that we understood what the Bible really has to say about all of this. Because in all honesty, if God didn't design me to succeed at it, then why on earth am I working so hard?!
But if He did design me to succeed... then I needed to settle the questions and silence the doubts once and for all.
Over the course of the last few years, I've spent a lot of personal time studying in order to do exactly that. I wanted to know for myself what the Bible said -- and not hear it from someone else who isn't even a businessperson!
Here are some things I studied:
- Is it selfish to have wealth?
- What does "stewardship" really mean?
- Does God want me to be, "in the ministry?"
- Should I feel guilty for wanting to succeed?
- How did Jesus plan for us to accomplish The Great Commission?
- What did people like Paul spend their time doing in the Book of Acts?
- What does the Bible mean when it says, "the love of money is the root of all evil"?
- What did Jesus have to say about business?
- What exactly is "covetousness?"
- What does "love not the world" mean?
- What was Jesus trying to teach the rich young ruler when He told him to sell everything he had?
- Perhaps even more importantly... does God expect me to sell everything and give it to the poor?
- Why is it so common for people to struggle with poverty and lack?
- Did God intend for me to barely have enough in life?
I Want to Share with You What I've Learned
Over the years, I've taught some portions of this -- either in the events that we hold for Kingdom-minded business people, or when ministering from the pulpit. But until recently, I had never put it all together in one place. And, like I said, I haven't been able to find a good treatment of this subject -- especially from a business perspective.
So, I sat down and went through all of this material. The result is over 5 hours of teaching on the subject of Christians, wealth, and money.
This new teaching series will be something we make available from now on when I speak -- in our own marketplace ministry events, in seminars and conferences, and in congregations. But I want to give you an opportunity to get your hands on it ahead of time.

"David has a gifting in teaching like few I have ever known.... [he] brings this in such a way that the body of Christ is inspired towards building the Kingdom of God in their own family, church, and town. Not only so, but they are also inclined towards new efforts and creative ways that they had not used before; which makes positive change more probable."
